We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Driving round Lowestoft looking for a yard that will take your car, then accepting whatever the weighbridge says, is the old way of scrapping a car. It still suits some people with a running, road-legal car and a free afternoon. For everyone else, collection does the same job without the trip, and you know the price before anything moves.

Our side of the job starts from one message. Send the registration, the postcode and a description of the car as it is, including faults, missing parts and whether it starts, and add photos if you can. That is enough for a firm price. At collection, the driver needs photo ID from you and access to the car, not a journey to anywhere.

Lowestoft is the furthest town we cover, over 500 miles from our Fort William base, so collections here are grouped into less frequent runs and booked well in advance. We agree the date when you accept the price, and the car can stay where it is until then. Collection is free: the price we quote already allows for the journey. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Lowestoft are on our local collection notes.

Why collection beats a trip to a scrap yard

Collection earns its keep with the cars that cannot easily reach a yard. A car with no valid MOT cannot legally be driven there. A car on a SORN has to stay off the road. A non-runner with flat tyres, no keys or a seized handbrake needs lifting, not towing. For any of those, a recovery vehicle is the safe and legal way out. It also means the price comes first: you send the reg and a description, we reply with a firm figure and how long it stands, and nothing moves until you accept. Collection is free, with the journey already allowed for in the price we quote, and payment is by bank transfer to an account in your name.

Scrap metal merchant or treatment facility?

The phrase scrap yard covers two very different businesses. A scrap metal merchant buys metal: old radiators, cable, cookers and offcuts. It needs a metal dealer's licence from the council, but that alone does not let it take in a whole car. An end-of-life vehicle still holds fuel, oil, coolant, refrigerant and a battery, so the law treats it as hazardous waste until it has been depolluted, and only an Authorised Treatment Facility with an environmental permit from SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England may do that. That facility is also the only place that can issue a Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped. So before you take a car anywhere, ask which kind of yard it is.

What sets a scrap price in Lowestoft

Two cars of the same age can fetch different prices for good reasons. The first is weight, because scrap value is mainly the metal. The second is what is still fitted: an engine, gearbox, catalytic converter and a full set of wheels all add value that a stripped car does not have. The third is demand for that model's parts. The fourth is the metal market, which moves every week. The fifth is distance and access from our route to your address in Lowestoft. We roll all five into one firm figure and tell you how long it stands. If the car matches your description on the day, that is the figure you are paid, by bank transfer to an account in your name.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

Do you cover Beccles, Kessingland and the villages around Lowestoft?

Yes. NR32 and NR33 cover Lowestoft, Oulton Broad, Pakefield, Carlton Colville, Corton and Kessingland, and NR34 takes in Beccles. Bungay, Hopton and the Norfolk side towards Gorleston may be possible on the same run: send the postcode with the reg and we will confirm on WhatsApp whether we can collect.

My car is on a SORN. How do I get it to a scrap yard?

You should not drive it there: a car declared off the road can only go on a public road to a pre-booked MOT. The answer is to have it collected. We lift it from your drive or garage onto a recovery vehicle, and the SORN ends when the car is scrapped and the DVLA is told.

What paperwork does a scrap yard give me?

A Certificate of Destruction, issued by the licensed treatment facility when the car is scrapped; the facility notifies the DVLA too. That certificate does not end your responsibility: telling the DVLA you sold the car to the motor trade does, online with the V5C reference or by posting the filled-in yellow V5C/3 slip. Your tax is then cancelled and any full months left refunded.

Why can you not give me a price per tonne like a yard?

Because we are quoting for the whole job, not weighing at a gate. Our figure takes in the weight, current metal prices, the make and model, the condition and what is still fitted, plus distance and access. The figure we agree is the figure you are paid if the car matches.

Is a scrap yard the same as a breakers yard?

Not quite. Both must be Authorised Treatment Facilities to take end-of-life cars, but a scrap yard prices mainly on weight and metal, while a breaker takes off parts that can be reused and sold. If your car still has healthy parts, read about selling a car for breaking before you decide.
