How collection works in Dundee

Before your scrap car is collected
Scrapping is final, so check nothing of value is left in the car. How a scrap price is worked out
When we price a scrap car we start with its kerb weight and that week's metal prices, which set the base rate. Then we check whether it is complete, since a missing catalytic converter or a set of wheels already sold takes value off, whether the engine or gearbox is still wanted as parts, and how far away the car is and how easily it can be loaded, which count in the figure rather than as a separate charge. After the car has gone: the DVLA and your certificate
The piece of paper that matters is the Certificate of Destruction. The licensed treatment facility issues it when your car is scrapped, not us, and it shows the vehicle was destroyed legally; the facility also informs the DVLA. Selling to us counts as a sale to the motor trade, so report the sale to the DVLA yourself as well. GOV.UK says you can be fined if you do not, and until the DVLA knows, you are still recorded as the keeper. You can cancel the insurance once the car has been collected, as there is no need to wait for the certificate. Keep the certificate with your records, alongside the date the car left Dundee, in case a letter about it ever arrives.

Do you cover Broughty Ferry and Monifieth?

My car is in a multi-storey car park or a communal court in Dundee. Can you collect it?
It depends on access. Height limits and barriers in multi-storey car parks can stop a recovery truck, so tell us the car park, level and bay when you book, and we will say whether it can be reached. If the car is taxed, insured and has a valid MOT, moving it to street level first keeps things simple. In a communal court, tell us whether there is vehicle access and any barrier.
Can you collect an abandoned car from outside my house in Dundee?
No. We can only buy a car from its registered keeper or someone legally entitled to sell it, such as an executor or attorney; someone else can hand a car over for the keeper with the keeper's written authority, but payment still goes to the keeper. If a car has been dumped on your street, report it to Dundee City Council, which has powers to remove abandoned vehicles.
I have lost the V5C. Can I still scrap my car?
Usually, yes. We ask for photo ID and proof you own the car, such as a purchase receipt, and the driver checks both on the day. Without a logbook you cannot report the sale online, so you write to the DVLA instead, giving your name and address, the registration, make and model, the exact date of sale and our name and address.
Should I take the battery or catalytic converter off before the car is scrapped?
No. Both are part of what the car is worth, and the price we quote assumes they are still fitted. Taking them off lowers the figure and gives you something else to dispose of. If either has already gone, or the converter was stolen, say so when you send the reg so the price is right first time.
The car is not registered to me. Can I still scrap it?
It depends on why. If it belonged to a relative who has died, the person dealing with their estate can sell it, with photo ID and papers showing that role, such as the will, grant of probate or confirmation in Scotland. If the logbook still shows a previous keeper, tell us before we book the Dundee collection and we will explain what proof we need.
Could my car be worth more than its scrap value?
