We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Car dismantling is the regulated process of taking an end-of-life vehicle apart so that its hazardous materials are contained, its reusable parts are recovered and its metals are recycled. In Scotland and England it may only be done at an Authorised Treatment Facility, a site authorised by the environmental regulator: SEPA in Scotland, the Environment Agency in England. Motor Salvage Group buys cars for dismantling, collects them free and delivers them to licensed partner facilities.

Below is what happens once your car leaves your drive, step by step. Knowing the steps helps you understand why the paperwork matters, why a Certificate of Destruction can only come from the facility, and why you should never let a car go to someone who cannot say where it is being taken.

We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name, our premises are in Fort William, and the dismantling is carried out by our partners rather than by us. We do not sell the parts that come out of the cars we deliver. If you want to know what those parts add to your price, our guide to selling a car for its parts value explains it.

Step one: receipt and the vehicle record

When your car arrives at the Authorised Treatment Facility it is logged against its registration and chassis number and checked against the details recorded at collection. Once the car has been treated and scrapped, the facility uses this record to issue a Certificate of Destruction in your name and to notify the DVLA. That is why the driver checks your photo ID, and the V5C if you have it, at collection: the certificate has to go to the right person. What ends your responsibility for the car, though, is your own notice to the DVLA that you have sold it to the motor trade.

Step two: depollution

Before anything is cut or crushed, the hazardous contents come out. The 12-volt battery is removed. Fuel, engine oil, gearbox oil, brake fluid, coolant, screenwash and air-conditioning refrigerant are drained into separate sealed tanks. Airbags and seat-belt pretensioners are deployed or removed. Tyres come off, and any components containing mercury or lead are set aside. Each of these streams goes to a licensed waste contractor. Depollution is the reason an end-of-life car cannot be dismantled on a driveway or at an unlicensed site, and it is the step that protects soil and water.

Step three: parts recovery

With the car made safe, the dismantlers remove the components that can be reused. Engines, gearboxes, alternators, starter motors, radiators, lights, mirrors, doors, bonnets, tailgates, seats and wheels are typical. The catalytic converter is recovered for its precious metals. Parts the facility can sell are checked, labelled and stored. Motor Salvage Group does not sell these parts and cannot reserve them for you; the facility decides what happens to them. The value of recoverable parts is, however, part of how we price your car when you ask for a quote.

Step four: shredding and recycling

What remains after parts recovery is a bare shell with its wiring, glass and plastics. It is crushed and sent to a shredder, where it is broken into small pieces. Magnets pull out the steel, eddy-current separators recover aluminium and copper, and the remaining fraction is sorted for plastics and other materials. The law sets high recovery targets for end-of-life vehicles, so as much of the car as possible goes back into use, and only what cannot be recovered is disposed of. By this point the DVLA has been notified and your Certificate of Destruction issued.

What you do, and what the facility does

Your part is short. Have photo ID ready, and the V5C if you have it. Remove your belongings, and if you want to keep a private registration, apply to the DVLA to retain it before the sale. Tell us if the car is leaking fluids, has a damaged battery or is electric or hybrid, so the driver comes prepared and the car goes to the right facility. Do not drain anything yourself, and if you take any parts off, tell us before we price the car, because it changes the figure. Apart from telling the DVLA yourself that you have sold the car to the motor trade, everything after collection is the facility's job: depollution, dismantling and, when the car is scrapped, the Certificate of Destruction and the DVLA notification.

Not sure which service you need? It does not matter. Send us the reg and we will tell you the best route, or read how the process works.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

What decides the price we pay

We do not publish a price list because every car is different. These are the five things that move the number, so you know exactly what you are being paid for.

  • Call for its components

Once a car is made safe, the facility removes the components it can place. Makes and models with a steady call for engines, gearboxes and panels give it more to recover, which lifts the price.

  • How complete the car is

A car that arrives with its engine, gearbox, wheels and catalytic converter still fitted has more for the dismantlers to recover. Missing or broken parts reduce that, so tell us what has gone.

  • Age and mileage of the main units

An engine or gearbox with moderate mileage, from a car still common on the road, is more likely to be reused. Very old or worn units are more likely to end up recycled as metal.

  • Collection distance and loading

You pay nothing for collection. The miles from our route to your address, and any awkward loading such as flat tyres or a car in a garage, are part of how we set the figure.

  • Metal prices as the base

What is left after dismantling is shredded and sold as steel, aluminium and copper. Those prices are part of every figure we quote, and they move, so we say how long a price stands.

Questions people ask us

Are you the dismantlers, or do you use someone else?

We buy and collect the cars; licensed Authorised Treatment Facility partners dismantle them. Our own premises are in Fort William. We say this plainly because the facility that dismantles your car is the one that, when the car is scrapped, notifies the DVLA and issues your Certificate of Destruction, and you should be able to find out which it is.

Can a car be dismantled anywhere?

No. Once a car is an end-of-life vehicle, it has to be treated at an Authorised Treatment Facility, a site authorised by SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England. Depolluting or dismantling an end-of-life vehicle without that authorisation is an offence and can pollute land and water. Never sell to anyone who cannot name their facility.

What is depollution and why does it matter?

Depollution is the removal of a car's hazardous contents before dismantling: the battery, fuel, oils, coolant, brake fluid, refrigerant, airbags and tyres. Each is captured and handled by licensed contractors. It is a legal requirement for end-of-life vehicles, and the reason they are dismantled at an authorised facility rather than on a driveway.

How long does dismantling take?

It varies from facility to facility, and none of the dismantling needs you: the car is depolluted first, then stripped and shredded when the facility schedules it, and the figure we agreed does not change. When the car is scrapped, the facility issues your Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA; the one step for you is telling the DVLA yourself that you have sold the car to the motor trade.

Do I get the parts value when my car is dismantled?

The value of recoverable parts is one of the things we consider when we price your car, alongside weight, make, model, condition and distance. You are paid the agreed figure by bank transfer. Once we have bought the car it goes to the facility, which keeps the parts it recovers; we do not sell them and cannot pass them back to you.

Which facility will dismantle my car?

A licensed partner facility chosen for the collection route. Ask us which licensed facility will take your car and we will tell you. It is worth knowing, because when the car is scrapped, that facility issues your Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA, and you can look the facility up on the public register kept by SEPA or the Environment Agency.

Do you buy electric and hybrid cars for dismantling?

Yes. They go to partners equipped to handle high-voltage batteries. The battery is isolated and removed by trained staff before the rest of the car is treated. Tell us the car is electric or hybrid when you ask for a quote so we route it correctly, and read how electric and hybrid cars are scrapped for more.
