Who we are
Motor Salvage Group buys scrap, damaged and non-running vehicles. Our base is at Unit 1a, Mt Alexander, Camaghael Road, Fort William, in the Highlands, and we buy across Scotland and England by collecting from the seller.
We are a small business and would rather tell you exactly how things work than dress them up.
What we buy
Cars, vans and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, of any age, make or fuel type, including electric and hybrid cars. Condition is not a barrier: MOT failures, non-runners, accident and flood damage, cars that have sat on a driveway for years, and insurance write-offs in categories B, S and N. A car that was damaged but never claimed on has no category, and we buy those too.
Most of the cars we buy go to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility. A car broken for parts there is still an end-of-life vehicle, so the paperwork is the same as for a car scrapped whole.
How we work
You send your registration and postcode on WhatsApp or through the online quote form. We reply with one firm price, worked out from the car's weight, make and model, condition, the demand for its parts, the distance to collect it and that week's metal prices. If you accept, we agree a collection date. The driver checks the vehicle against your description, records your ID as the law requires, and you are paid by bank transfer. There is no collection charge: distance is part of the price we quote, and the figure we agree is the figure you are paid. We have no yards in the towns we collect from. Collections run on scheduled routes from Fort William, so the date depends on where you are, and we agree it with you rather than promising a day we cannot keep.
How we pay, and why never cash
Every payment is a bank transfer to an account in the seller's name. The cash ban covers the whole of Great Britain; in Scotland it came into force in 2016, when the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 was amended. The law requires a traceable payment, such as a bank transfer or a non-transferable cheque, and we use bank transfer. It gives both of us a record of the sale.
Treatment facilities and the DVLA
Scrap vehicles must be depolluted and destroyed at an Authorised Treatment Facility, permitted by SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England. The facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when a car is scrapped. We are the buyer, not the facility, and we work with licensed ATF partners for this part. Because you are selling to the motor trade, you also tell the DVLA yourself, online, that you have sold the car. The DVLA does not approve, license or endorse scrap buyers, so you will not see that claim here.
What we will not do
We will not offer cash. We will not claim a yard in your town that does not exist. We will not publish reviews we cannot trace to a real customer, and we will not quote a price we do not intend to pay. If a price has to change at collection, the driver explains why before anything is loaded, and you can say no.

Where is Motor Salvage Group based?
Our one base is at Unit 1a, Mt Alexander, Camaghael Road, Fort William PH33 7NF, in the Highlands. It is not a public scrap yard with a drop-off counter. We buy by collecting from the seller, on scheduled routes that start from Fort William and reach towns across Scotland and England.
Why collect from me instead of running local yards?
So that you never need to find a yard or arrange a tow. We work from a single base in Fort William and come to your address instead. The town pages show where we collect and which postcodes are covered; they do not mean there is a branch round the corner, and we will not claim a yard that does not exist.
Is Motor Salvage Group an Authorised Treatment Facility?
No. We buy the car, but we are not a treatment facility and do not depollute or destroy vehicles ourselves. That work is done by the Authorised Treatment Facility we use, and it is that facility, not us, that notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction once a car is scrapped. Keep the certificate with your records.
Do you buy from garages and fleets as well as private sellers?
Yes. Send all the registrations in one message and we will quote for them together. A business selling a vehicle needs to show its authority to sell, and we pay by bank transfer to an account in the name of the business.
Is Motor Salvage Group approved by the DVLA?
No, and no scrap buyer is: the DVLA has no approval scheme for companies that buy scrap cars. What matters is that the car goes to an Authorised Treatment Facility, which notifies the DVLA when it is scrapped, and that you tell the DVLA yourself that you have sold it to the motor trade.
