Breakers yard: sell your car for breaking, collected free
We buy cars worth more in parts than as metal, and licensed partners break them. We do not sell parts.
- Any make, any condition
- Firm price in writing on WhatsApp
- No admin fees
A breakers yard buys cars that are worth more in pieces than whole, strips them for reusable parts and recycles what is left. Motor Salvage Group buys cars and vans for breaking across Scotland and England, collects them free of charge and pays by bank transfer. The breaking itself is done by our licensed Authorised Treatment Facility partners.
One thing to be clear about before you read on: we buy vehicles, we do not sell parts. If you are looking for a second-hand gearbox or a door in a particular colour, we cannot help, and we would rather say so now than waste your time. If you have a car that a breakers yard would want, this is the right page.
Our premises are in Fort William. We do not run a walk-in yard, so the sale almost always happens by collection from your address, and when the car is scrapped, the facility that breaks it issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA. If you want to know how the parts on your car affect its price, our guide to selling a car for its parts goes through it component by component.
What a breakers yard does with your car
At a licensed breakers yard the car is first depolluted: the battery comes out and the fuel, oils, coolant and refrigerant are drained. Then the parts with a second life are removed, tested and catalogued, typically the engine, gearbox, alternator, starter motor, lights, doors, bonnet, wheels and interior trim. The catalytic converter is recovered for its precious metals. What remains is crushed and shredded so the steel and non-ferrous metals can be recycled. Because the car has been destroyed, the facility notifies the DVLA and issues a Certificate of Destruction.
Breakers yard near me? Why there is no yard to visit
Most people searching for a breakers yard nearby picture driving the car in and haggling at the gate. Selling to us works the other way round. Send the registration, your postcode and a note of what works and what does not. We confirm on WhatsApp whether we can collect and send a firm price. Once you accept, we agree a collection date on one of our scheduled routes from Fort William. The driver checks the car, sees your ID and loads it, and payment is by bank transfer to an account in your name. The licensed partner then breaks the car and issues the Certificate of Destruction.
Why a car for breaking can be worth more than scrap
A scrap price is driven by weight. A breaking price is driven by what can be sold from the car. A hatchback with a rotten sill but a healthy engine and a common gearbox has parts that repairers want, so it can fetch more than its metal. The same goes for popular alloy wheels, undamaged panels in a common colour, or a catalytic converter still in place. When you ask us for a quote, tell us what works and what does not: the more we know, the better we can price the car. For a closer look at which components add value, read about selling a car for its parts value.
We buy cars for breaking. We do not sell parts
Motor Salvage Group is a vehicle buyer and collection service. Our partners break the cars we deliver, and they decide what happens to the parts. We have no parts counter, no online stock list and no way of reserving a component for you. If you need a used part, a dedicated parts supplier or a local breaker with a stock list will serve you better. If you need to sell a car for breaking, send us the registration.
Selling a Category B write-off
Category B is given by an insurer after a claim when a car's body shell must be destroyed but its parts can be reused. These cars cannot go back on the road, so breaking is their lawful route. Insurers usually keep Category B cars rather than let the owner retain them, but if you do own one, for example one bought for parts that you no longer need, we can collect it. Tell us the category when you ask for a quote, because it affects where the car can go. Our licensed partners break Category B vehicles and issue the Certificate of Destruction. For Cat S and Cat N cars, see our page on selling a salvage or write-off car.

Collected and paid
We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.
What decides the price we pay
We do not publish a price list because every car is different. These are the five things that move the number, so you know exactly what you are being paid for.
- Demand for the model's parts
A breaker looks at a car the way a repairer shopping for spares would. Makes and models that many people still keep running have parts in steady demand, so they break better than rare ones of the same weight.
- Which parts work and what is missing
A running engine, a gearbox that shifts, straight panels, decent alloys and the catalytic converter carry most of a breaking price. Tell us what works, what has failed and anything already taken off.
- Mileage and age
A younger engine or gearbox with modest mileage has more life left for its next owner, so it adds more. Age matters as far as it decides how many cars on the road can use the parts.
- Where the car is
We charge nothing for collection. The distance from our route and how easily the truck can reach and load the car are allowed for inside the breaking price we quote.
- Metal prices
Whatever the breaker cannot reuse is recycled as metal, so current metal prices are part of every breaking price. They move, which is why we tell you how long a price stands.

Learn moreQuestions people ask us
Do you sell used car parts?
No. We buy cars and vans for breaking and deliver them to licensed partners who do the breaking. We do not stock, list or sell parts to the public, and we cannot reserve a part from a car we collect. For used parts, contact a dedicated parts supplier or a breaker with a stock list.
Can I visit your breakers yard?
There is no yard to visit. Our base in Fort William is not a public yard, and we buy cars across Scotland and England by collecting them. Send your registration and postcode for a price, and our driver collects the car from your address. The breaking happens at a licensed partner facility.
Will I get more for my car from a breakers yard than a scrap yard?
Often, if the car has parts in demand. A common model with a working engine, gearbox and undamaged panels can be worth more broken than weighed. An old, corroded car with little reusable content is priced closer to scrap. Describe the car honestly and we will quote accordingly.
Can I keep some parts before the car is collected?
Yes, as long as you tell us before we quote, because removing the engine, wheels, catalytic converter or battery changes the price and may change how we collect the car. A car with no wheels needs a different lift. Never remove the battery or drain fluids yourself unless you know how.
What paperwork do I get when my car is broken?
A Certificate of Destruction, which the licensed Authorised Treatment Facility issues when the car is scrapped, notifying the DVLA at the same time; keep it with your records. It does not end your responsibility on its own: you do that by telling the DVLA you have sold the car to the motor trade, online with the V5C reference number or by posting the yellow V5C/3 slip. Any full months of tax left are then refunded and a Direct Debit cancelled, automatically.
How is a car for breaking priced?
By the make, model, age, mileage, weight and condition, and above all by which parts are still usable. Distance to your address also counts. We do not publish fixed prices. Send the registration and a clear description and the figure we agree is the figure paid, provided the car matches it.
