We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

The usual picture of a breakers yard is a drive to an industrial estate, a look round the car at the gate and a price agreed there and then. Selling to us skips the visit but keeps the idea: a breaker's price, based on what the car still has, agreed before anything moves. If your car is in Atherton, we buy it where it stands, and licensed partners do the breaking.

A breaking price is only as firm as the description behind it. Tell us whether the car starts and drives, what has failed, the mileage, and anything taken off or replaced recently. Photos of each side, the interior and the engine bay help. With that, the figure we send on WhatsApp is the figure you are paid, provided the car matches when the driver sees it.

Atherton is about 300 miles from our Fort William base, and collections here are grouped with other north-west and Cheshire collections, including Crewe, into scheduled runs that come round less often than our Scottish ones. We agree the date when you accept the price. Tell us where the car is parked and how close a truck can get. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Atherton are on our local page.

Why there is no yard trip to make

Count what a trip to a breakers yard really involves. Someone has to drive the car there, which needs tax, insurance and a valid MOT, or tow it, which needs a second person to steer, or put it on a trailer. Someone has to get home again afterwards. And the price is only settled once you are at the gate, when turning round is the last thing you want to do. Selling by collection moves all of that onto us and puts the price first. The figure is agreed on WhatsApp from your description and photos before anything moves, collection is free, and the car goes from your address to a licensed partner for breaking. For how each part affects the figure, see what makes a car worth more in parts.

The sale, the handover and the paperwork

Collection itself is short. The driver checks the registration, looks the car over against your description, sees your photo ID and records the sale. Loading takes most of the time, so a little notice helps. Missing keys can leave the steering locked; a seized handbrake or flat tyres can stop the car rolling; a garage, a gate or a steep drive needs a clear line for the truck. Mention any of that when you send the reg. Leave the fluids and battery alone: removing them is the treatment facility's job. If you have the V5C, note its reference number and keep back the yellow slip when the driver takes the logbook. Then tell the DVLA the car has gone to the motor trade, online with that number or by posting the slip. The DVLA stops the tax, repays any full months left and ends a Direct Debit.

Parts buyers: what we can and cannot do

If you are after a gearbox, a headlight or a door in the right colour, this page will not get you one. Motor Salvage Group buys whole cars for breaking and passes them to licensed partners; we do not sell, reserve or ship parts to the public. That is worth knowing before you get in touch. What we can do is help when a repair has stopped making sense. If the part you were hunting for is going to cost more than the car is worth, or the fault keeps coming back, send us the registration and a description instead. We will give you a firm price for the car as it is, collect it from your address in Atherton free of charge, and pay by bank transfer.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

How long will I wait for collection in Atherton?

We cannot give a set number of days, because Atherton is on a less frequent north-west run. What you do get is the date itself, agreed when you accept the price, so you can check it against any deadline, such as a house move or the end of a tenancy, before you commit. Until then the car can stay where it is.

Does my car need to be complete to be sold for breaking?

No. A breaker will still take a car with parts missing, but the price is set on what is left, so tell us exactly what has gone before we quote. A car with its engine, gearbox, wheels and catalytic converter in place usually has more to offer than one that has been stripped.

Who breaks the car once you have collected it?

A licensed Authorised Treatment Facility partner, not us. We are the buyer: we price the car, collect it and pay you. The facility removes the battery and fluids, takes off the parts that can be reused and recycles the rest. When the car is scrapped, it issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA.

Can I tow my car to a breakers yard myself?

It is possible but seldom worth it. A tow on a rope or bar needs working brakes and steering on the towed car, someone competent to steer it, a towing vehicle that can handle the weight and the right insurance cover. A damaged car often fails the first of those. A recovery vehicle carries it clear of the road instead.

Why do you want photos of a car I am selling for breaking?

Photos show what a description cannot: dents and scrapes on the panels, the state of the interior, whether the wheels are alloys and any damage around the lights or glass. They let us price the parts that still have value without a visit, and they mean fewer surprises when the driver arrives.
