We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Motor Salvage Group buys damaged cars in Atherton: Category B, S and N write-offs that you own, accident damage you chose not to claim for, and cars hit by flood or fire. Send the registration, the category if there is one, and photos of the damage, and we reply with a price that counts the undamaged parts as well as the metal.

Collection in Atherton is free and done with a recovery vehicle, so a car that cannot steer or roll is not a problem. Payment is by bank transfer. As a rule, the cars we buy go to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility for parts recovery and recycling, and when a car is scrapped the ATF issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA.

Atherton is about 300 miles from our Fort William base, and collections here are grouped with other north-west and Cheshire collections, including Crewe, into scheduled runs that come round less often than our Scottish ones. We agree the date when you accept the price. Tell us where the car is parked and how close a truck can get. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Atherton are on our local page.

Write-off categories and what to tell us

Write-off categories are set by insurers after a claim: A for cars that must be crushed whole, B for cars whose shell must be crushed but whose parts can be reused, S for structural damage and N for damage that is not structural. A car with a car park dent that nobody claimed for has no category, however much the repair would cost. We buy B, S and N write-offs that you own and uncategorised damaged cars, but Category A only for crushing. Still weighing up whether to hold on to a Category S or N car? Expect the insurer to reduce the settlement by its salvage value, and get a salvage price to put beside that reduction first. Declare the category when you send the reg, because it stays with the car.

Photos that get an accurate salvage price

A salvage price rests on what survived the damage, so show us the good parts as well as the bad. A front-end collision may leave the gearbox, interior, rear panels and wheels untouched, and those all count. Send wide shots of all four sides, close-ups of the impact, and pictures of the seats, dashboard and engine bay. Note the mileage, the category from any settlement letter and whether the airbags deployed. If the car is at a garage or compound in Atherton, ask whether someone there can take the photos. The more we can see, the less chance of a surprise when the driver arrives.

When your damaged car is not at home

Collecting from a business site in Atherton is straightforward if the paperwork is sorted first. Most garages and compounds need to know the car is being released on your instructions, and some ask for a reference number or signed note. Some sites charge daily storage, so ask before the bill grows. A car on hire purchase or PCP belongs to the finance company until it is settled, and after a write-off the insurer's payment normally goes to that company first, so mention anything still owed when you ask for a price. Tell us the name of the site, its address and the times it is open, and whether the car is inside a building or in a yard. The driver loads it on a recovery vehicle, and as a rule, cars we buy go on to a licensed treatment facility.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

How long will I wait for collection in Atherton?

We cannot give a set number of days, because Atherton is on a less frequent north-west run. What you do get is the date itself, agreed when you accept the price, so you can check it against any deadline, such as a house move or the end of a tenancy, before you commit. Until then the car can stay where it is.

Which write-off categories do you buy?

Category B, S and N, plus damaged cars that were never claimed on and so have no category. Category B cars are bought for their parts, since the shell must be crushed. We can still take a Category A car, but only to be crushed at a licensed facility, so it is priced on its metal. Tell us if the settlement letter says Category A.

Which photos should I send for a salvage price?

One from each corner in daylight, close-ups of the damage, the dashboard with the ignition on if it still powers up, the interior and the engine bay. Add the mileage and which airbags deployed. Good photos let us give you a firm price for the car without seeing it first.

What happens with the V5C and my vehicle tax when you buy the car?

The V5C comes to us with the yellow slip torn off. You tell the DVLA you sold the car to the motor trade, online with the V5C reference or by posting the filled-in slip, and the tax is cancelled with any full months left refunded. Lost the V5C? Write to the DVLA instead. Send any keys you have; a missing one can change the price and the truck we send.

Do you buy flood-damaged cars?

Yes. Flood water damages wiring, electronics and interiors, and corrosion follows, so a flooded car is often not worth repairing. Tell us how high the water came and for how long. Do not try to start a car that has been in deep water, because that can wreck the engine.
