We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Paisley is the largest town in Renfrewshire and sits just west of Glasgow, with the M8 running past between junctions 27 and 29 and Glasgow Airport at Abbotsinch on its doorstep. Coming down from Fort William, a truck crosses the Erskine Bridge into Renfrewshire, so the town is simple to reach whether the car is in the centre near the Abbey, in Ferguslie Park, Foxbar or Glenburn, or out in Linwood, Johnstone, Elderslie or Renfrew. Tell us whether the car is on a tenement street, on a drive, in a garage court or in a shared car park, so we send the right truck. Paisley is outside Glasgow's Low Emission Zone, so an older petrol or diesel can still be driven around town without a penalty; the zone only matters if you take the car into Glasgow city centre.

Scrapping a car in Paisley starts with a message. Send us the reg, your postcode and a few words on the condition, and we reply with one figure rather than a range. Accept it and we book a collection date; turn it down and that is the end of it. There is no collection charge: distance is one of the things that sets the price, and the figure we agree is the figure you are paid.

Where in Paisley we collect

Our drivers cover Paisley town centre, Ferguslie Park, Gallowhill, Foxbar, Glenburn, Ralston, Hunterhill, Renfrew, Johnstone, Linwood, Elderslie and Erskine, across the PA1, PA2, PA3, PA4, PA5, PA6, PA7 and PA8 postcode areas. If your postcode is not listed, send it with the reg anyway and we will confirm on WhatsApp whether we can collect.

How collection works in Paisley

Motor Salvage Group operates from Fort William, about 110 miles north of Paisley, and has no site in Renfrewshire. Paisley jobs are grouped with Glasgow and Inverclyde collections into scheduled runs, and the date and time window are agreed when you accept the price. The driver checks the car against your description, sees your photo ID, takes the V5C if you have it and loads it, and you are paid by bank transfer to an account in your name.

Getting the car ready for collection

It helps to sort the small things first. Find the logbook, or tell us now if it is lost, and keep your driving licence or passport nearby for the ID check. Empty the car: sat navs, dashcams, child seats, parking permits and anything tucked under the seats. A private plate you want to keep has to come off through the DVLA before the car goes, and our pre-scrap checklist lists the other jobs worth doing. A car on SORN has to stay off the public road until collection, and one parked on the street must be taxed, insured and have a valid MOT. If the car is in a garage, a shared court or a car park in Paisley, let us know how the recovery vehicle reaches it and whether anyone needs to open a gate or barrier.

What decides the price of a scrap car

Think of a scrap price as the metal in the car, adjusted for what is on it and where it is. Heavier cars carry more steel and aluminium. A complete car beats a stripped one, and the catalytic converter is worth checking for, since it contains precious metals. Mileage matters little when a car is priced as scrap, although a popular engine or gearbox can still add something, and a car with a single fault may be better priced as a non-runner rather than as scrap. Collection has no separate charge, but the distance from our base and any tricky access in Paisley are part of the figure we quote. Because metal markets move, the price comes with a note of how long it stands.

After the car has gone: the DVLA and your certificate

Once the car leaves Paisley it goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility. The facility removes fuel, oil, coolant, the battery and other hazardous parts, recovers anything reusable and sends the shell for recycling, and when the car is scrapped it issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA. Your own step is to tell the DVLA that you have sold the car to the motor trade; GOV.UK says you can be fined if you do not. Once the DVLA knows, the tax stops and any full months left are refunded automatically. Cancel your insurance after collection, and file the certificate somewhere safe.

Read our full guide to scrapping a car, see the three steps from reg to payment, or send us the reg.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

Do you collect from Johnstone, Linwood and Renfrew as well as Paisley?

Yes. The PA1 to PA8 area is covered, including Johnstone, Linwood, Elderslie, Renfrew, Bishopton and Erskine, and we also collect from Barrhead and Neilston on the East Renfrewshire side. Send your postcode with the reg and we will confirm on WhatsApp.

My car was a private hire or taxi with very high mileage. Can you still buy it?

Yes. Tell us the mileage, whether the engine or gearbox has ever been replaced and what still works, because on a car worth breaking that is where the value sits. If it still carries a council licence plate or signage, check with Renfrewshire Council what must be returned before collection.

Can you collect from a tenement street in Paisley town centre?

Yes, as long as the driver can stop safely and winch the car onto the truck. Tell us the street and whether the car is in a bay, a back court or a lane so the right vehicle is sent, and have any keys, and the V5C if you have it, ready at the agreed time.

What documents should I have ready when the car is collected?

Photo ID, the V5C logbook if you have it, and any keys you have. Hold back the yellow section of the V5C: either post it to the DVLA, or report the sale online with the 11-digit reference and keep the slip. With no logbook, bring proof you own the car, such as a purchase receipt, and write to the DVLA instead.

Do you scrap vans and 4x4s as well as cars?

Yes. We buy vans, 4x4s and light commercials up to 3.5 tonnes as well as cars. A heavier vehicle carries more metal, which counts in its favour, but racking, tools or rubbish left in the back must come out first. Tell us the body type and anything fitted to it when you send the reg.

I cannot be there on collection day. Can someone else hand the car over?

Yes, if you tell us before the collection. A nominated adult can meet the driver with their own photo ID and your written authority to hand the car over, plus any keys and the V5C if you have them. The payment still goes by bank transfer to an account in your name as the seller, not to the person who meets the driver.

Does mileage change what I get for a scrap car?

Very little. A car at the end of its life is valued mainly on its weight and metal, with some extra where the engine, gearbox or catalytic converter are in demand. Mileage starts to matter when a car is worth more for its parts, so mention it when you send the reg.
