We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Scrap it, or sell it as it is?

If the car is at the end of its life and you simply want it gone legally, scrapping it is the straightforward route: priced mainly on weight and metal, collected free and paid by bank transfer. If it still has life in it but will not start or has failed its MOT, selling it as a broken car can be worth more than scrap, because its condition and parts count too. Insurance write-offs in categories B, S and N, and cars with accident damage, belong under auto salvage.

Finding the right buyer

Searching for a scrap yard near you? A scrap yard is where end-of-life cars are processed, but you do not need to find one or get the car there: we collect from your address. If you are comparing buyers, choosing a car scrapper sets out the legal checks, the payment rules and the warning signs to look out for.

Parts, breaking and dismantling

Some cars are worth more for their parts than their metal. Selling to auto breakers explains which components add value and how that shows in the price. The breakers yard page is for anyone looking for one nearby: cars are broken for parts by licensed partners, and we do not sell parts ourselves. Car dismantling walks through depollution, parts recovery and recycling in order.

Electric and hybrid cars

An EV or hybrid carries a high-voltage battery that needs specialist handling at a suitable treatment facility. Electric car scrap covers the battery, safety and what affects the price. Whichever guide fits your car, the service is the same: send the reg, get one firm price, and we collect.

What decides the price we pay

We do not publish a price list because every car is different. These are the five things that move the number, so you know exactly what you are being paid for.

  • Weight

Scrap value starts with the metal. A heavy estate or 4x4 carries more steel and aluminium than a small hatchback, so it is worth more as scrap.

  • Make and model

Cars with sought-after engines, gearboxes or panels can be worth more than their weight, because those parts are reused rather than shredded.

  • Condition and completeness

A complete car with its catalytic converter, battery and wheels prices higher than one that has been stripped. Non-runners are fine; missing parts change the figure.

  • Distance and access

There is no collection charge. How far the car is from our routes, and whether it needs a winch or a smaller truck, are built into the price we quote, so the figure we agree is the figure you are paid.

  • Metal prices that week

Scrap steel and catalytic converter metals move in price from week to week. That is why we tell you how long a price stands when we send it, and why we do not promise a figure months ahead.

Choosing the right service

Which guide fits a car that still runs but is not worth repairing?

If it runs but has failed its MOT or needs repairs that cost more than it is worth, the guide for a car with a fault or a failed MOT is the closer fit. If it is simply worn out, scrap car collection is the plainer route. Either way, tell us it runs and what is wrong with it when you ask for a price, so the figure reflects the car as it is.

Where does a written-off or accident-damaged car fit?

Whether an insurer was involved decides it. A written-off car carries a category letter that sets what can happen to it: a Category A car can only be crushed whole, while the other categories can still be sold for salvage. A damaged car that was never claimed on has no category at all. The write-off and damage guide explains how each is valued, so give us the category, if there is one, when you ask for a price.

Is there a separate service for electric and hybrid cars?

The guide is separate; the service is the same. Scrapping an electric or hybrid car follows the same steps as any other: you send the reg, get one firm price and have the car collected free. Tell us the battery's condition if you know it, because it affects the value.

Does it matter which guide I read before asking for a price?

No. Every guide leads to the same service, and we price the car itself, not the page you found us through. Send the registration, the postcode and an honest description, and we work the figure out from weight, make and model, condition, parts demand, distance and that week's metal prices. If a different route would suit the car better, we tell you.

Which guide covers selling a car for its parts?

Start with the guide to selling a car for parts. We buy the car as it stands and licensed partners do the breaking, so what the parts are worth reaches you in the price we pay rather than through a parts sale.
