What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser so it can recognise you between pages or visits. Browsers also offer similar storage, called local storage and session storage. Some cookies are needed for a site to work; others track behaviour for analytics or advertising. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, most cookies that are not strictly necessary, such as advertising cookies, need your consent first.

What visitors get: nothing

Browsing this site, reading a guide or using the quote form does not set any cookie and does not write anything to your browser's local or session storage. The one exception is optional: the map on the contact page loads only if you press Show the map (see Links to other services below). We do not run analytics, advertising or social media pixels, so nothing on this site follows you to other websites. If we add any measurement or advertising tool in future, we will ask for your consent first and update this page.

How the quote form stops spam without cookies

The form uses three checks, none of which stores anything in your browser:

  • A hidden field. The form contains a field that people cannot see. Automated scripts tend to fill it in, and a submission with that field filled is ignored.
  • A timing check. A submission sent too soon after the form opened to have been typed by a person is ignored.
  • A rate limit. Our server counts submissions for 10 minutes, filed under a one-way hash of your IP address rather than the address itself. The count is kept on our server, not on your device, and expires after 10 minutes.

What happens to the details you type into the form is covered by our privacy policy.

Cookies for people who log in to manage the site

WordPress, which runs this site, sets the cookies below only for people who log in to the admin area, such as our own staff. Visitors never receive them. They are strictly necessary for logging in and are not used for tracking.

  • wordpress_test_cookie: set when the login page is opened, to check the browser accepts cookies. Lifetime: until the browser is closed.
  • wordpress_sec_[hash]: keeps the login to the admin area secure. Lifetime: until the browser is closed (the login itself lapses after two days), or 14 days if Remember Me is ticked.
  • wordpress_logged_in_[hash]: tells WordPress who is logged in. Lifetime: the same as wordpress_sec_[hash].
  • wp-settings-[user id]: remembers how that person has arranged the admin screens. Lifetime: one year.
  • wp-settings-time-[user id]: records when those admin preferences were last saved. Lifetime: one year.

Links to other services

A WhatsApp link or button on this site hands you to WhatsApp, which is operated by Meta under its own terms and privacy policy. Links to Facebook, Instagram, GOV.UK and the Information Commissioner's Office likewise take you to those organisations' own websites and apps, which set their own cookies under their own policies. The map on our contact page stays switched off until you choose to show it: nothing is loaded from Google until you press Show the map. If you do, the map loads from Google Maps, and Google may then set its own cookies under Google's cookie policy. We do not embed videos or social feeds.

How to control cookies

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the help pages for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge explain how. Blocking cookies makes no difference to how this site works for visitors.

Questions about this policy

Does the map on the contact page set cookies?

Only if you choose to show it. The map stays switched off until you press Show the map, and nothing loads from Google before then. If you do show it, the map loads from Google Maps and Google may set its own cookies under Google's cookie policy.

How does the quote form stop spam without cookies?

With three checks that store nothing in your browser: a hidden field that people cannot see but automated scripts tend to fill in, a timing check that ignores a form sent too soon after it opened, and a count of submissions on our server, filed under a one-way hash of your IP address, which expires after 10 minutes.

Which cookies does WordPress set, and who gets them?

Only people who log in to manage the site, such as our own staff. WordPress sets wordpress_test_cookie, wordpress_sec and wordpress_logged_in to handle the login, and two wp-settings cookies that remember admin screen preferences for one year. They are strictly necessary for logging in, are not used for tracking, and visitors never receive them.

Do the WhatsApp and social media links set cookies?

Not on this site. A WhatsApp link or button hands you to WhatsApp, which Meta operates under its own terms and privacy policy. Links to Facebook, Instagram, GOV.UK and the Information Commissioner's Office take you to those organisations' own websites and apps, which set their own cookies under their own policies.
