After the car has gone: the DVLA and your certificate
Once the car leaves Cumbernauld it goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility. The facility removes fuel, oil, coolant, the battery and other hazardous parts, recovers anything reusable and sends the shell for recycling, and when the car is scrapped it issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA. Your own step is to tell the DVLA that you have sold the car to the motor trade; GOV.UK says you can be fined if you do not. Once the DVLA knows, the tax stops and any full months left are refunded automatically. Cancel your insurance after collection, and file the certificate somewhere safe.

My car is in a garage court behind the houses. Can the truck reach it?
Usually yes. The driver can winch a non-runner out of a garage or across a parking square to the truck. Tell us if the court is gated or the access lane is narrow, so we send the right vehicle, and have any keys, and the V5C if you have it, ready.
I cannot be there when the truck comes to Cumbernauld. Can someone else hand the car over?

I have lost the V5C. Can I still scrap my car?
Usually, yes. We ask for photo ID and proof you own the car, such as a purchase receipt, and the driver checks both on the day. Without a logbook you cannot report the sale online, so you write to the DVLA instead, giving your name and address, the registration, make and model, the exact date of sale and our name and address.
There is still fuel in the tank. Is that a problem?
No. You do not need to drain anything, and you should not try. The licensed treatment facility removes fuel, oil, coolant and other fluids safely as part of depollution. There is simply no point filling up before the car goes. If fuel or oil is leaking, tell us so the driver comes prepared.
My car still has finance on it. Can I scrap it?
Not until the finance is dealt with. A car on hire purchase or PCP belongs to the finance company until the agreement is settled, so settle it first or get the lender's written permission to sell. Mention the agreement when you ask for a price, so the collection can be planned around it.
My car was damaged in an accident. Is scrapping the right route?
