We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Search for car scrappers and you will find plenty of names, and not all of them do the job properly. In law an end-of-life car is waste, so the people who buy it, move it and dismantle it need the right licence or permit. Hand your car to someone without them and the DVLA record can still show you as the keeper of a car you thought had gone.

This page sets out what any legitimate car scrapper should do, the questions worth asking and the warning signs that mean you should walk away. It applies whoever you sell to. Motor Salvage Group buys scrap cars across Scotland and England, collects them free and pays by bank transfer to an account in your name. When a car we buy is scrapped, the licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) we use issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA.

Our only premises are in Fort William. We work by collection rather than through local yards, so we would rather be clear about how the car is moved, where it goes and what paperwork follows than leave you to guess. If you already know you want the car gone, see how scrapping a car with us works.

Four things a legitimate car scrapper will do

First, pay you by bank transfer or another traceable method, because paying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain. Second, take the car only to an Authorised Treatment Facility permitted by SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England, so a Certificate of Destruction is issued when it is scrapped. Third, record who they bought the car from, which dealers must do by law and is why you will be asked for photo ID. Fourth, agree a price on the description you give and change it only if the car turns out to be different, rather than finding new faults once they are on your doorstep.

Questions to ask before you hand over the keys

Ask which kind of facility the car will go to and who will issue the Certificate of Destruction. Ask how you will be paid, and walk away from anyone who offers notes on the doorstep. Ask whether the price can change at collection and on what grounds. Ask what happens if you do not have the V5C. A straight answer to each is a good sign. Be wary of anyone who says the DVLA has approved or registered them: the DVLA does not approve or license scrap dealers at all.

Red flags that should make you walk away

An offer of cash, which is illegal for a scrap vehicle anywhere in Great Britain. A claim of approval by the DVLA, since no such approval exists. A price that falls sharply once the driver is at your door, for faults you had already described. A collection or admin fee that appears after the quote. Being told you do not need a Certificate of Destruction, or that the V5C does not matter. Pressure to decide on the doorstep. None of these proves you are dealing with a rogue, but each one is a reason to stop and ask harder questions.

How we handle payment, paperwork and ID

We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name, once the driver has checked the car against your description and seen your ID. Cars we buy for scrapping go to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility partner, which issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA when the car is scrapped. You should also tell the DVLA yourself that you have sold the car to the motor trade, online with the 11-digit reference from your V5C or by posting the yellow V5C/3 section. The driver records your details as the law requires. Our premises are in Fort William and we collect from your address, so there is no yard to visit. Collection is free and there are no admin fees: distance is already allowed for in the price we quote, and the figure we agree is the figure you are paid, provided the car is as described. Every stage, from the first WhatsApp message to the paperwork that follows when the car is scrapped, is covered in our step-by-step guide to selling.

Scrapping a car without the V5C, keys or MOT

A car can be scrapped without a current MOT or road tax, and it can be on a Statutory Off Road Notification. It can also be scrapped without keys, although the driver will need to be able to move it onto the recovery vehicle, so tell us in advance. If the V5C is missing, you will need photo ID and other documents that link you to the car, such as an insurance certificate or a purchase receipt, and we will tell you which. What we cannot do is buy a car from someone who is not entitled to sell it, so expect us to ask questions before we confirm a price.

Not sure which service you need? It does not matter. Send us the reg and we will tell you the best route, or read how the process works.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

What decides the price we pay

We do not publish a price list because every car is different. These are the five things that move the number, so you know exactly what you are being paid for.

  • Weight

Scrap value starts with the metal. A heavy estate or 4x4 carries more steel and aluminium than a small hatchback, so it is worth more as scrap.

  • Make and model

Cars with sought-after engines, gearboxes or panels can be worth more than their weight, because those parts are reused rather than shredded.

  • Condition and completeness

A complete car with its catalytic converter, battery and wheels prices higher than one that has been stripped. Non-runners are fine; missing parts change the figure.

  • Distance and access

There is no collection charge. How far the car is from our routes, and whether it needs a winch or a smaller truck, are built into the price we quote, so the figure we agree is the figure you are paid.

  • Metal prices that week

Scrap steel and catalytic converter metals move in price from week to week. That is why we tell you how long a price stands when we send it, and why we do not promise a figure months ahead.

Questions people ask us

Are car scrappers regulated?

Yes. Dealers need a licence from their council: a scrap metal dealer licence in England and Wales, or a metal dealer's licence in Scotland. The facilities that dismantle cars need an environmental permit from SEPA in Scotland, the Environment Agency in England or Natural Resources Wales. And paying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal across Great Britain.

Is Motor Salvage Group a scrap yard or a collection service?

A buyer and collection service. Our only premises are in Fort William, and we buy cars across Scotland and England by collecting them from your address. Cars we buy for scrapping go to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, which issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA when the car is scrapped.

What is a Certificate of Destruction and why does it matter?

It is the document an Authorised Treatment Facility issues when a car is scrapped. It confirms the vehicle is being destroyed. Only an Authorised Treatment Facility can issue one, so any scrapper who promises to hand you one on the doorstep is mistaken. What ends your responsibility for the car is your own notice to the DVLA that you have sold it to the motor trade, online or with the yellow V5C/3 slip.

Why will a car scrapper not pay me in cash?

Because it is illegal. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 bans cash payments for scrap vehicles in England and Wales, and in Scotland the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015, in force since 2016, does the same by amending the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.

Can a car scrapper collect from anywhere?

We collect from homes, workplaces, garages and storage sites across Scotland and England. Send your postcode with the reg and we confirm on WhatsApp whether we can collect. The driver needs safe access for a recovery vehicle, so tell us about steep drives, narrow lanes or locked compounds when you ask for a quote.

Will I be asked for identification when my car is collected?

Yes. Scrap dealers are legally required to record the identity of the person they buy from, so our driver will ask to see photo ID and will note your details. This protects you as well as us, because it stops stolen vehicles being scrapped under someone else's name.
