Electric car scrap: scrapping an EV or hybrid safely
We collect the car without driving or charging it, and trained partner staff make the battery safe before dismantling.

Electric and hybrid cars reach the end of their lives for the same reasons as any other: accident damage, age, faults that cost more than the car is worth. What is different is the high-voltage battery. It stores enough energy to cause serious injury or fire if it is handled badly, and it must be removed and processed by people trained to do it. Motor Salvage Group buys electric and hybrid vehicles for scrap across Scotland and England and delivers them to licensed partner facilities equipped for high-voltage work.
Collection is free and payment is by bank transfer to an account in your name. At the facility the battery is isolated and removed before the rest of the car is dismantled, then sent for recycling or reuse through licensed battery handlers. When the car is scrapped, the facility notifies the DVLA and issues a Certificate of Destruction in your name.
We buy all makes, full electric and hybrid. We do not sell battery packs, modules or any other EV parts. Our premises are in Fort William and we serve Scotland and England by collection. Tell us where the car is, and whether the battery has been damaged, when you ask for a price. For the steps every car goes through at the facility, see how dismantling works.
Why an electric car cannot be scrapped like a petrol car
A petrol car is made safe by draining fluids and removing a 12-volt battery. An electric car also carries a traction battery running at several hundred volts, and a hybrid carries a smaller one alongside its engine. Cutting into that pack, or dismantling around it without isolating it first, risks electric shock and thermal runaway, the chain reaction behind lithium battery fires. Damaged packs can overheat or catch fire hours or even days after an impact. For these reasons an EV must go only to a facility with the training, tools and quarantine space to handle high-voltage systems.
How we handle the collection
When you ask for a quote, tell us the car is electric or hybrid, whether the battery has been damaged, and whether any warning lights or fault messages were showing before it stopped. If the car has been in a collision or flood, say so, because a compromised pack changes how it is transported. Our driver collects the car on a recovery vehicle without attempting to drive or charge it. Collection is free and payment is by bank transfer. The car is routed to a partner facility equipped for high-voltage vehicles.
Before you hand the car over
Tell us if the 12-volt battery is flat, because many electric cars cannot release the parking brake or go into neutral without it. Remove the car from the manufacturer's app and sign out of any accounts on the screen, so your data and remote access leave with you. Leave any charging cables that came with the car. If the car is on finance, or its battery was on a separate lease, as some older EVs were, settle that before you sell. And if the pack is damaged, keep the car outdoors and do not charge it.
What happens to the battery
At the facility, trained staff isolate the high-voltage system and remove the battery pack before any other dismantling begins. The pack is assessed. Packs with usable capacity may be considered for second-life use, such as stationary storage; damaged or degraded packs go to licensed battery recyclers, where the cells are processed to recover lithium, cobalt, nickel and other materials. Motor Salvage Group does not sell battery packs or modules. The rest of the car is then depolluted, dismantled and recycled in the normal way.
How electric cars are priced for scrap
An EV price depends on the make and model, the age and mileage, the condition and state of the battery, reusable parts such as the motor, inverter, charger and wiring, the weight of the vehicle and the distance to collect it. A car with a healthy battery and undamaged drive unit is worth more than one that has been flooded, because of what the facility can recover. We do not publish fixed prices. Send the registration and an honest description, including any known battery faults, and the figure we agree is the figure you are paid, provided the car matches.
Not sure which service you need? It does not matter. Send us the reg and we will tell you the best route, or read how the process works.
Three steps. One WhatsApp message.
You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

Send your reg on WhatsApp
Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

Get a firm price
We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

Collected and paid
We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.
What decides the price we pay
We do not publish a price list because every car is different. These are the five things that move the number, so you know exactly what you are being paid for.
- Make, model, age and weight
Newer and popular models carry parts that are in demand, and a heavier car holds more recoverable material. Tell us whether it is fully electric, a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid.
- Motor, inverter and charger
An undamaged drive motor, inverter and on-board charger can be reused, so a car whose drive unit still works is priced higher than one with a failed drive system.
- Type of damage
Flood and fire lower the price most, because water and heat can harm the battery and its electronics. The pack sits under the floor, so underside impacts matter too.
- Distance and access
Collection is free, with no separate charge. Distance and ease of loading are part of the price, so the quote already allows for them. Tell us if it will not go into neutral.
- Battery condition and range
The traction battery is the most valuable part. A pack that still gave a good range is worth more than a degraded or faulty one, so tell us the range and any warnings.

Learn moreQuestions people ask us
Can you scrap a fully electric car?
Yes. We buy battery electric cars and vans of any make across Scotland and England. Tell us the model and whether the battery is damaged when you ask for a quote. Collection is free, payment is by bank transfer, and the car goes to a partner facility equipped to handle high-voltage batteries.
Do you take hybrid cars as well?
Yes. Conventional hybrids and plug-in hybrids both carry a high-voltage battery alongside the engine, so they need the same specialist handling as a full EV. Tell us the car is a hybrid when you request a price so we route it to the right facility.
What happens to the battery in my electric car?
Trained staff at the facility isolate the high-voltage system and remove the pack before dismantling anything else. Packs with usable capacity may be assessed for second-life storage use; damaged or degraded packs go to licensed battery recyclers, which recover lithium, cobalt, nickel and other materials.
Is it safe to keep a damaged EV on my drive until collection?
It can be, with precautions. A battery damaged in a collision or by water can overheat hours or days later, so keep the car outdoors, away from buildings and other vehicles, and do not charge it or try to move it. Describe the damage when you ask for a price, and tell us if the drive is right beside the house or a garage. If you see smoke or hear hissing, keep away and call 999.
What if the battery in my EV is leased?
Some older electric cars were sold with the battery on a separate lease, so the battery belongs to the leasing company rather than to you. Check your paperwork and tell us when you ask for a price. The lease has to be settled or ended with the lessor first, because a battery you do not own cannot be sold.
Do you sell EV batteries or parts?
No. We buy electric and hybrid vehicles for scrap and deliver them to licensed partners. The facility handles the battery and any recoverable parts. We do not sell packs, modules, motors or any other components to the public and cannot reserve them for you.
Is an electric car worth more or less than a petrol car for scrap?
It depends on the battery and drive unit. A pack with usable capacity and an undamaged motor can add value, while a flooded or fire-damaged EV may be worth less because of the handling involved. Send the registration and details for a firm figure.
