Electric car scrap in East Kilbride

Electric cars come to the end of their lives for ordinary reasons, from accident damage to a fault that costs more than the car is worth. What changes is the battery pack. Getting an electric car ready for collection

Tell us first whether the car can be put into neutral. That often depends on the small 12-volt battery rather than the main pack, so the driver should know in advance if it is flat. Say too whether the high-voltage battery has been damaged: a car that has been in a collision, a flood or a fire needs a different plan, and must not be charged in the meantime. Then clear your data. Remove the car from the maker's app and reset the infotainment system, so your account, contacts and home address are not left behind when it leaves East Kilbride.

What happens to the battery

The high-voltage battery is the part that sets an EV apart, and it is never dealt with at the roadside. At a partner facility with high-voltage training and equipment, trained staff isolate the system and check it is safe before any other dismantling starts. The pack is then removed and assessed. One with usable capacity may be considered for second-life use, such as stationary energy storage; a damaged or worn-out pack goes to a licensed battery recycler, where the cells are processed to recover materials including lithium, nickel and cobalt. Only then is the rest of the car depolluted, dismantled and recycled like any other.

What decides the price of an electric car

When you ask for a price, the details that move it most are about the battery. What range was the car managing before it stopped? Has the dashboard shown a battery or charging fault? Has the car been in water, a fire or an impact to the underside, where the pack sits? After that come the ordinary factors: make, model, age, mileage, condition, and how far the car is from our collection routes. The week's metal prices play a part as well.
