We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Driving round East Kilbride looking for a yard that will take your car, then accepting whatever the weighbridge says, is the old way of scrapping a car. It still suits some people with a running, road-legal car and a free afternoon. For everyone else, collection does the same job without the trip, and you know the price before anything moves.

Send the registration and your postcode on WhatsApp and we will confirm whether we can collect and what we can pay. Collection is free: distance is one of the things that sets the price, so the figure quoted already allows for the journey. Payment is by bank transfer, and the paperwork is dealt with by the licensed facility that scraps the car.

East Kilbride is about 115 miles from our Fort William base, and we have no depot in South Lanarkshire. Collections here share scheduled runs with Glasgow and the rest of Lanarkshire, and the date is agreed when you accept the price. Until then the car can stay where it is, whether that is at home or at work. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in East Kilbride are on our East Kilbride collection page.

Why collection beats a trip to a scrap yard

Think about what a yard visit involves from East Kilbride. You need a car that can be legally driven, or a trailer and a vehicle able to tow it. You need to find a yard that takes whole cars, not just scrap metal, and check it is a permitted treatment facility. Then you queue at the weighbridge and accept the figure you are given. Collection removes every one of those steps. We quote first, on WhatsApp, from the registration and your description. Once you accept, we agree a date. The car is lifted onto a recovery vehicle from a drive, a garage or the kerb, as long as the truck can reach it safely, and you never have to move it.

Not every scrap yard can take a car

The phrase scrap yard covers two very different businesses. A scrap metal merchant buys metal: old radiators, cable, cookers and offcuts. It needs a metal dealer's licence from the council, but that alone does not let it take in a whole car. An end-of-life vehicle still holds fuel, oil, coolant, refrigerant and a battery, so the law treats it as hazardous waste until it has been depolluted, and only an Authorised Treatment Facility with an environmental permit from SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England may do that. That facility is also the only place that can issue a Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped. So before you take a car anywhere, ask which kind of yard it is.

How a scrap yard price is worked out

What does a car in East Kilbride fetch as scrap? It depends less on its age than people expect, and more on what it is made of and what is left on it. The metal content sets the base, priced against the market at the time we quote, so we tell you how long that figure holds. Anything still fitted that has value of its own, such as the catalytic converter, an engine that could be reused or a set of alloys, can push it up. Anything missing pulls it down, which is why we ask. Then there is the collection itself: how far the car is from our route and how easy it is to reach. None of that is added later as a fee. It is all in the one figure we agree.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

Do I need to be there when the car is collected in East Kilbride?

Someone does, but it need not be you. The person at the car needs their own photo ID, plus any keys and the V5C if you have them. If that is not the registered keeper, they also need the keeper's written authority. Tell us beforehand who to expect.

Is it legal to tow a broken car to a scrap yard?

It can be, but it is rarely practical. Towing on a rope or bar needs a vehicle able to handle the weight, someone competent steering the towed car, working brakes and steering on it, and the right insurance cover. A non-runner with seized brakes or no keys can fail on those alone. A recovery vehicle carries the car clear of the road, which is what we send.

What paperwork does a scrap yard give me?

A Certificate of Destruction, issued by the licensed treatment facility when the car is scrapped; the facility notifies the DVLA too. That certificate does not end your responsibility: telling the DVLA you sold the car to the motor trade does, online with the V5C reference or by posting the filled-in yellow V5C/3 slip. Your tax is then cancelled and any full months left refunded.

Is a scrap yard price just the weight of the car?

Weight and the current metal price are the starting point, not the whole story. The make and model, whether the engine, wheels and catalytic converter are still there, and the distance from our route all count. We quote a firm figure from the registration and your description, and tell you how long it stands.

What should I remove before the car goes for scrap?

Personal belongings from the cabin, boot and door pockets, any parking permit or toll tag, and dashcams or phone holders you want to keep. If the car carries a private number plate, apply to the DVLA to keep it first. Leave the wheels, battery and parts fitted unless you told us otherwise.
