We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Driving round Livingston looking for a yard that will take your car, then accepting whatever the weighbridge says, is the old way of scrapping a car. It still suits some people with a running, road-legal car and a free afternoon. For everyone else, collection does the same job without the trip, and you know the price before anything moves.

Our side of the job starts from one message. Send the registration, the postcode and a description of the car as it is, including faults, missing parts and whether it starts, and add photos if you can. That is enough for a firm price. At collection, the driver needs photo ID from you and access to the car, not a journey to anywhere.

Livingston is roughly 130 miles from our Fort William base and shares scheduled runs with Edinburgh and the rest of West Lothian. The date is agreed when you accept the price. Tell us if the car is in a garage court, a shared car park or on a narrow street, so we send the right truck. Industrial units are fine. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Livingston are on our page for Livingston.

Getting your car to a yard without driving it

Taking a car to a yard yourself sounds simple until you check the rules. To be driven there, the car needs tax, insurance and a valid MOT, and a non-runner has to be towed or trailered, which brings its own risks. Then there is the price. A yard weighing a car at the gate has every reason to be cautious, and you have little room to argue once you have made the trip. With collection, the order is reversed. You send the registration and an honest description, you get a firm price in writing, and only then does a recovery vehicle come to your address. If the car matches what you told us, the figure agreed is the figure paid, by bank transfer.

Which kind of yard your car needs

The phrase scrap yard covers two very different businesses. A scrap metal merchant buys metal: old radiators, cable, cookers and offcuts. It needs a metal dealer's licence from the council, but that alone does not let it take in a whole car. An end-of-life vehicle still holds fuel, oil, coolant, refrigerant and a battery, so the law treats it as hazardous waste until it has been depolluted, and only an Authorised Treatment Facility with an environmental permit from SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England may do that. That facility is also the only place that can issue a Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped. So before you take a car anywhere, ask which kind of yard it is.

Weight, metal prices and the rest of the quote

What does a car in Livingston fetch as scrap? It depends less on its age than people expect, and more on what it is made of and what is left on it. The metal content sets the base, priced against the market at the time we quote, so we tell you how long that figure holds. Anything still fitted that has value of its own, such as the catalytic converter, an engine that could be reused or a set of alloys, can push it up. Anything missing pulls it down, which is why we ask. Then there is the collection itself: how far the car is from our route and how easy it is to reach. None of that is added later as a fee. It is all in the one figure we agree.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

Do you collect across West Lothian or only Livingston?

Both. EH54 covers Livingston itself, and we also collect from Bathgate, Broxburn, Uphall, Whitburn, Armadale, West Calder, East Calder and Linlithgow on the same run. Send your postcode with the reg and we will confirm on WhatsApp.

My car is on a SORN. How do I get it to a scrap yard?

You should not drive it there: a car declared off the road can only go on a public road to a pre-booked MOT. The answer is to have it collected. We lift it from your drive or garage onto a recovery vehicle, and the SORN ends when the car is scrapped and the DVLA is told.

Why does a scrap yard ask for photo ID?

Because anyone buying scrap metal, including a whole car, must record who they bought it from. The rule exists to stop stolen vehicles and metal being sold on. Expect the driver to see your photo ID and note your details at collection. A buyer who does not ask is cutting a corner that protects you as well.

Is a scrap yard price just the weight of the car?

Weight and the current metal price are the starting point, not the whole story. The make and model, whether the engine, wheels and catalytic converter are still there, and the distance from our route all count. We quote a firm figure from the registration and your description, and tell you how long it stands.

What should I remove before the car goes for scrap?

Personal belongings from the cabin, boot and door pockets, any parking permit or toll tag, and dashcams or phone holders you want to keep. If the car carries a private number plate, apply to the DVLA to keep it first. Leave the wheels, battery and parts fitted unless you told us otherwise.
