Scrap yard in Atherton: free collection instead of a trip

A scrap yard visit means a legal drive or a tow, then a price at the gate. Collection from your address in Atherton means a firm price first, no trip, and payment by bank transfer.

We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Driving round Atherton looking for a yard that will take your car, then accepting whatever the weighbridge says, is the old way of scrapping a car. It still suits some people with a running, road-legal car and a free afternoon. For everyone else, collection does the same job without the trip, and you know the price before anything moves.

What we need from you is short: the registration, your postcode and a few honest lines about the car, such as whether it starts, what is wrong with it, anything missing and whether you have the V5C. Photos help. When the driver comes, have photo ID ready and details of a bank account in your name. A yard trip would need a road-legal car or a trailer as well; this needs neither.

Atherton is about 300 miles from our Fort William base, and collections here are grouped with other north-west and Cheshire collections, including Crewe, into scheduled runs that come round less often than our Scottish ones. We agree the date when you accept the price. Tell us where the car is parked and how close a truck can get. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Atherton are on our page for Atherton.

Getting your car to a yard without driving it

Collection earns its keep with the cars that cannot easily reach a yard. A car with no valid MOT cannot legally be driven there. A car on a SORN has to stay off the road. A non-runner with flat tyres, no keys or a seized handbrake needs lifting, not towing. For any of those, a recovery vehicle is the safe and legal way out. It also means the price comes first: you send the reg and a description, we reply with a firm figure and how long it stands, and nothing moves until you accept. Collection is free, with the journey already allowed for in the price we quote, and payment is by bank transfer to an account in your name.

Which kind of yard your car needs

The kind of yard you need depends on what you are getting rid of. Loose scrap metal can go to a metal merchant. A whole car, whether it runs or not, has to go to an Authorised Treatment Facility, a site permitted by SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England to depollute vehicles and recover their parts and metals. It is the only kind of site that can issue a Certificate of Destruction when a car is scrapped, and it is where the cars we buy for scrapping go: a licensed treatment facility partner, not a general metal yard. So when you weigh up a yard against collection, make sure you are comparing like with like.

How a scrap yard price is worked out

A scrap price starts with weight: how much steel, aluminium and copper the car will yield, set against current metal prices, which move up and down. A heavier estate or 4x4 carries more metal than a small hatchback. Then comes completeness. A car with its engine, gearbox, wheels and catalytic converter in place is worth more than a shell, so tell us if anything has been removed. Make and model matter where parts are in demand, and condition matters for the same reason. Last is distance and access from our route to your address, and the journey is allowed for in the one figure we quote. There is no separate collection charge and no admin fee.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

The car is on a terraced street in Atherton with cars parked either side. Can you still load it?

Yes. The driver needs a clear stretch of kerb near the car and enough room to winch it up the ramp. If the street is very congested, ask a neighbour to move a car. If yours is taxed, insured and has a valid MOT, you could also move it to a quieter road first; if it is not road legal, do not drive it, even a short way.

Is it legal to tow a broken car to a scrap yard?

It can be, but it is rarely practical. Towing on a rope or bar needs a vehicle able to handle the weight, someone competent steering the towed car, working brakes and steering on it, and the right insurance cover. A non-runner with seized brakes or no keys can fail on those alone. A recovery vehicle carries the car clear of the road, which is what we send.

What paperwork does a scrap yard give me?

A Certificate of Destruction, issued by the licensed treatment facility when the car is scrapped; the facility notifies the DVLA too. That certificate does not end your responsibility: telling the DVLA you sold the car to the motor trade does, online with the V5C reference or by posting the filled-in yellow V5C/3 slip. Your tax is then cancelled and any full months left refunded.

Will I get less if parts are missing?

Usually, yes. A car without its engine, catalytic converter, wheels or battery weighs less and has less to recover, so the price reflects it. That is fine as long as you tell us before we quote. Parts taken off after the price is agreed are exactly what makes a figure change on collection.

Is a scrap yard the same as a breakers yard?

Not quite. Both must be Authorised Treatment Facilities to take end-of-life cars, but a scrap yard prices mainly on weight and metal, while a breaker takes off parts that can be reused and sold. If your car still has healthy parts, read about selling a car for breaking before you decide.
