We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Often the trigger is a repair quote nobody wants to pay. A dead clutch, a failed turbo, a blown head gasket or an electrical fault that keeps coming back can all make repair poor value on an older car. We buy the car with the fault still in it, and the price counts the parts that still work.

The car is collected from Atherton on a recovery vehicle, so it never needs to move under its own power. Payment is by bank transfer to an account in your name. As a rule, the cars we buy go to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, which issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA when a car is scrapped.

Atherton is about 300 miles from our Fort William base, and collections here are grouped with other north-west and Cheshire collections, including Crewe, into scheduled runs that come round less often than our Scottish ones. We agree the date when you accept the price. Tell us where the car is parked and how close a truck can get. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Atherton are on our Atherton collection page.

Getting a firm price for a car with a fault

Precise information gives you a firm quote that reflects the car; vague information means that firm quote has to allow for the unknown. Tell us the make, model and mileage, then the symptoms in plain words: will not start, starts but will not move, overheats, loses coolant, runs rough, jumps out of gear. If the MOT tester or a garage has put the fault in writing, send a photo of it. Say whether the car is complete or whether the wheels, battery or catalytic converter have been removed. Tell us where it is parked in Atherton and whether the wheels turn. We then send one figure, and that figure stands on the day as long as the car is as you described.

Weighing a repair bill against a sale

Start with two numbers: the repair estimate, and what the car would realistically sell for once fixed. If the first is close to the second, the repair is hard to justify, especially on an older car where another fault may follow. Add the cost of an MOT retest and the time spent advertising a car that has just been repaired. Then compare that with selling it as it is: one firm price, no outlay and a free collection from Atherton. There is no right answer for every car. A low-mileage car with a single, well-understood fault may be worth fixing. A tired car with a failed gearbox and rust on the sills usually is not.

Getting a non-runner ready for collection

A car that will not run is loaded onto a recovery vehicle, so the engine does not matter, but access does. The driver needs to reach the car, so tell us in advance if the wheels will not turn, the handbrake has seized, a tyre is flat or the steering lock is on without a key. Clear a path if the car is in a garage or tucked behind another vehicle. Until collection day, a car kept on a street in Atherton must be taxed, insured and have a valid MOT. Remove your belongings. After collection, tell the DVLA online or with the yellow V5C/3 slip that you sold the car to the motor trade. On the day the driver checks the car against your description and your photo ID, then loads it. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name once those checks are done.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

The car is on a terraced street in Atherton with cars parked either side. Can you still load it?

Yes. The driver needs a clear stretch of kerb near the car and enough room to winch it up the ramp. If the street is very congested, ask a neighbour to move a car. If yours is taxed, insured and has a valid MOT, you could also move it to a quieter road first; if it is not road legal, do not drive it, even a short way.

Should I get the fault diagnosed before asking for a price?

You do not have to, but a diagnosis can help. If a garage has already read the fault codes or written up the MOT failure, send us what they found. If not, describe the symptoms plainly. Either way we give you a firm figure for the car as it is.

The catalytic converter has been stolen. Can I still sell the car?

Yes. A car without its converter still has value in its metal and its other parts. Tell us it is missing when you send the reg, because the converter contains precious metals and its absence lowers the price. If you reported the theft to the police, keep the crime reference with your records.

How is a broken car priced differently from a scrap car?

A scrap car is priced mostly on weight and metal. A broken car can also be priced on the parts that still work, such as a good gearbox behind a failed engine. We look at the make, model, age, mileage and the fault you describe, as well as how far we travel to collect it.

How do I tell the DVLA I sold the car if there is no V5C?

Without the logbook you cannot use the online service, so you write to the DVLA instead. Give your name and address, the registration, make and model, the exact date of sale, and our name and address as the buyer. With a V5C, you report the sale online with its 11-digit reference or post the yellow slip.
