Choosing between car scrappers in Walsall is less about who advertises loudest and more about who can explain the process clearly, from the first message to the paperwork after collection. Anyone who turns vague when you ask for detail is best avoided, however good the figure sounds.
The price comes to you in writing on WhatsApp, together with how long it stands, because metal prices move. Keep that message. Accept the price while it stands and it becomes the agreed figure, the one you are paid. Once agreed, the only thing that can change it is the car turning out different from the description you gave us.
Walsall is nearly 400 miles from our Fort William base, so collections here are grouped into scheduled Midlands runs that come round less often than our Scottish ones. You know the collection date before you commit, because we agree it when you accept the price. Terraced streets are fine: the driver loads from the kerb. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Walsall are on our local collection notes.
Checks to make before you choose a scrapper in Walsall
Start with payment. Paying cash for a scrap vehicle is illegal in Great Britain, so rule out any buyer who mentions notes; a legitimate one pays by a traceable method such as bank transfer. Next, ask where the car will go. The answer should be an Authorised Treatment Facility with an environmental permit from SEPA in Scotland or the Environment Agency in England, and that facility, not the driver, issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped. Dealers also need a metal dealer's licence from their council, called a scrap metal dealer licence in England and Wales, and must record who they buy from, so expect a photo ID check. Walk away from anyone whose price falls at the door for faults you had already described, or who claims DVLA approval: the DVLA does not approve scrap buyers.
Comparing prices from different scrappers
A fair scrap price is built from a handful of things, and a buyer should be able to name them. The car's weight and the current metal prices set the base. Anything missing lowers it, especially the catalytic converter, which contains precious metals. Parts still in demand, such as a sound gearbox on a common model, can raise it. The journey to Walsall and the access at your address are part of the figure too, so a quote with no collection charge has already allowed for them. If a scrapper cannot explain their number in those terms, it is hard to know whether it will survive the visit. If an accident rather than age ended the car's life, a salvage price may count the surviving parts.
Before and during collection
Have three things to hand: photo ID, the V5C logbook if you still have it, and details of a bank account in your name. Clear the car of belongings, including the boot, door pockets and any parking permit. If the car has a private plate you want to keep, apply to the DVLA to retain it before collection, because a number cannot be taken off a car once it has been scrapped. Tell us about missing keys, flat tyres or a tight parking spot so the right recovery vehicle is sent. The driver checks the car against what you told us and records your details. If it matches, the agreed price stands and is paid by bank transfer. The Certificate of Destruction follows from the treatment facility when the car is scrapped.

Learn moreQuestions people ask us
Which Walsall postcodes do you cover?
WS1 to WS5, WS8, WS9 and WS10, which takes in the town centre, Bloxwich, Pelsall, Rushall, Shelfield, Brownhills, Aldridge, Walsall Wood and Darlaston. Willenhall (WV12, WV13) and Streetly (B74) are in Walsall borough but use other postcodes, while Wolverhampton, Cannock and West Bromwich lie outside it. For any of these, send your postcode with the reg on WhatsApp and we will confirm whether we can collect.
I cannot find the V5C. Can I still scrap the car?
Yes. Expect an ID check and a request for proof of ownership, such as the receipt from when you bought it. The DVLA's online service needs the logbook reference, so you write to them instead, giving your name and address, the registration, make and model, the exact date of sale and the buyer's name and address. If the car is registered to someone else, tell us before we quote.
I only have a spare key. Is that enough for a scrapper?
Hand over any keys you have, whether that is the main key, a spare or a worn one. Tell us how many there are when you ask for a price, because missing or faulty keys can change both the figure and the recovery vehicle we send, particularly if the steering lock is on.
Can a scrapper hand me the Certificate of Destruction at collection?
No. Only an Authorised Treatment Facility can issue one, and only once the car has reached it for scrapping. A driver who offers you a certificate on the doorstep is mistaken at best. What matters at collection is that the sale and your details are recorded properly.
I am still paying off a PCP deal. What do I do before scrapping?
Contact the lender first. Under PCP or hire purchase the car belongs to the finance company until the agreement is settled, so you need to pay it off, or get the lender's written permission, before any scrapper can buy it. Mention the finance when you send us the reg.
