We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Motor Salvage Group buys damaged cars in Edinburgh: Category B, S and N write-offs that you own, accident damage you chose not to claim for, and cars hit by flood or fire. Send the registration, the category if there is one, and photos of the damage, and we reply with a price that counts the undamaged parts as well as the metal.

Collection in Edinburgh is free and done with a recovery vehicle, so a car that cannot steer or roll is not a problem. Payment is by bank transfer. As a rule, the cars we buy go to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility for parts recovery and recycling, and when a car is scrapped the ATF issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA.

Edinburgh is around 145 miles from our Fort William base, and jobs in the city and the Lothians are grouped into scheduled runs rather than sent one at a time. We agree the date when you accept the price. In the centre's permit zones and tenement streets, we need the exact street before a truck is sent. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Edinburgh are on our local page.

Understanding the category on your car

Only an insurer gives a car a write-off category, and only after a claim. Category A means the whole car must be crushed, so we take one only for crushing. Category B means the shell must be crushed, although parts can be recovered. Category S covers structural damage, such as to the chassis or crumple zones, and Category N covers damage that is not structural. If you never claimed, the car has no category: it is simply damaged, and we buy it on that basis. Offered the chance to keep a Category S or N car? The insurer usually deducts its salvage value from your settlement, so compare that deduction with a salvage price from us before you decide. A car the insurer has taken is theirs to dispose of, not yours to sell.

What we need to price a damaged car

Blurred photos taken at night make a damaged car look worse than it is, and a cautious price follows. Take your pictures in good light, standing far enough back to show each whole side, then move in on the damage. Open the doors and photograph the interior, including the steering wheel and dashboard airbags. If the engine bay is reachable, include that too. Tell us what happened, for example a side impact, a rollover or a flood, and whether the car has been started since. Send the photos with the reg and your postcode, and we reply with a firm salvage price.

Releasing a car from a garage or storage yard

Collecting from a business site in Edinburgh is straightforward if the paperwork is sorted first. Most garages and compounds need to know the car is being released on your instructions, and some ask for a reference number or signed note. Some sites charge daily storage, so ask before the bill grows. A car on hire purchase or PCP belongs to the finance company until it is settled, and after a write-off the insurer's payment normally goes to that company first, so mention anything still owed when you ask for a price. Tell us the name of the site, its address and the times it is open, and whether the car is inside a building or in a yard. The driver loads it on a recovery vehicle, and as a rule, cars we buy go on to a licensed treatment facility.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

Is an Edinburgh LEZ penalty a reason to sell the car?

Not on its own. The zone only affects driving in the city centre, so a non-compliant car can still be used elsewhere. It becomes a reason when the car also needs costly work, such as repairs to pass an MOT. We price the car as it is from the reg and its condition, so you can weigh that figure against the repair bill.

Which write-off categories do you buy?

Category B, S and N, plus damaged cars that were never claimed on and so have no category. Category B cars are bought for their parts, since the shell must be crushed. We can still take a Category A car, but only to be crushed at a licensed facility, so it is priced on its metal. Tell us if the settlement letter says Category A.

Which photos should I send for a salvage price?

One from each corner in daylight, close-ups of the damage, the dashboard with the ignition on if it still powers up, the interior and the engine bay. Add the mileage and which airbags deployed. Good photos let us give you a firm price for the car without seeing it first.

Can I sell a written-off car without the V5C or all of its keys?

Yes. You write to the DVLA instead of going online, giving your name and address, the reg, make and model, the exact date of sale and our name and address. We ask for photo ID and proof of ownership, such as a receipt. Mention a missing key: it can change the price and the truck we send. Once the DVLA knows, any full months of tax left are refunded automatically.

Will you take a car that has been damaged by fire?

Yes. Fire damage is priced on what survived: a fire confined to the engine bay leaves more to recover than one that spread through the cabin. Send photos of every side and tell us where the fire started. The car is collected on a recovery vehicle.
