We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

Breaking a car means taking it apart for the components that still have a use, then recycling the rest. It is often the best route for a car that is too costly to fix but still has healthy parts. We buy those cars in Lowestoft, collect them free and pass them to licensed partners who do the breaking.

The details that fix a breaking price are the ones a breaker would look at on the forecourt: does it run, what is broken, what is missing and what state the bodywork is in. Send those with the registration and a few photos and we can price the car without seeing it. If anything changes before collection, such as a part coming off, tell us and we will look at the figure again.

Lowestoft is the furthest town we cover, over 500 miles from our Fort William base, so collections here are grouped into less frequent runs and booked well in advance. We agree the date when you accept the price, and the car can stay where it is until then. Collection is free: the price we quote already allows for the journey. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Lowestoft are on our page for Lowestoft.

Why there is no yard trip to make

The cars that suit breaking are often the ones that cannot reach a yard. A seized engine or a failed gearbox means the car will not drive, and without tax and a valid MOT it could not legally be driven there even if it did. Towing needs working brakes and steering on the towed car, which a damaged car may not have. A recovery vehicle avoids all of that: it lifts the car from a drive, a garage or the kerb, as long as the truck can reach it safely, and carries it clear of the road. You never have to find a breaker willing to take the car, or wait at a gate for an offer. If you want to know which parts lift the price, read our parts-value guide.

Selling a car for breaking

Before collection, have your photo ID, the V5C if you have it, and details of a bank account in your name. Clear out the cabin and boot, and retain any private plate through the DVLA first. Leave the parts fitted unless you told us you would remove them: a car described with its wheels and catalytic converter should still have them when the truck arrives. Before the logbook goes, note its 11-digit reference and tear off the yellow V5C/3 slip. Tell the DVLA about the sale online with that reference, keeping the slip with your records, or fill in the slip and post it. With no V5C, write to the DVLA with your name and address, the registration, make and model, the date of sale and our name and address. Once the DVLA knows, any full months of tax left are refunded automatically.

Looking for car parts? Read this first

If you are after a gearbox, a headlight or a door in the right colour, this page will not get you one. Motor Salvage Group buys whole cars for breaking and passes them to licensed partners; we do not sell, reserve or ship parts to the public. That is worth knowing before you get in touch. What we can do is help when a repair has stopped making sense. If the part you were hunting for is going to cost more than the car is worth, or the fault keeps coming back, send us the registration and a description instead. We will give you a firm price for the car as it is, collect it from your address in Lowestoft free of charge, and pay by bank transfer.

Read our full guide to selling a car to a breakers yard, see what happens after you send the reg, or ask for a firm price.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

How long will collection in Lowestoft take to arrange?

Longer than for our Scottish towns, because of the distance. We agree a firm date when you accept the price, and the car can stay where it is until then. If it is parked on a public road it must stay taxed, insured and, if it needs one, covered by a valid MOT while you wait; if it is kept off the road, declare it SORN.

The wheels are off my car. Can it still be collected for breaking?

Yes, but tell us before we quote. A car without wheels cannot be rolled or winched in the usual way, so the driver needs to know in advance and the right recovery vehicle is sent. The price also reflects the missing wheels, since they are parts a breaker could have reused.

Who breaks the car once you have collected it?

A licensed Authorised Treatment Facility partner, not us. We are the buyer: we price the car, collect it and pay you. The facility removes the battery and fluids, takes off the parts that can be reused and recycles the rest. When the car is scrapped, it issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA.

Will a breaker take a car that has no MOT and will not start?

Yes. A breaker is interested in the parts, not in whether the car can drive. What a non-runner cannot do is get to a yard under its own power, and without a valid MOT it should not be driven there anyway. We collect it on a recovery vehicle, so neither problem stands in the way.

Should I compare other offers before I sell my car for breaking?

It is sensible to compare. Ask each buyer the same things: will they collect, how will they pay, is the car going to an Authorised Treatment Facility, and can the price change when they see it. Ask us the same things on WhatsApp and we will answer in writing: free collection, bank transfer, a licensed partner facility, and a price that changes only if the car differs from your description.
