Dismantling an end-of-life car legally needs an authorised site, trained staff and proper handling of every fluid, which is why it cannot be done on a driveway. Our part is to buy the car from you in Dundee, collect it on a recovery vehicle at no charge and take it to a facility authorised to do the work.
We buy the car and handle the collection from Dundee; the dismantling itself is done by a licensed partner facility. Before you hand the driver the V5C, tear off the yellow V5C/3 slip. You then tell the DVLA you have sold the car to the motor trade, either online with the V5C reference number or by filling in the slip and posting it. If you tell the DVLA online, keep the slip with your records. We do not sell the parts the facility recovers.
Dundee is around 130 miles from our Fort William base, and collections in the city, Broughty Ferry and the Angus side are grouped into scheduled runs across Tayside. We agree the date when you accept the price, and the driver rings on approach. Tell us if the car is in a multi-storey or a communal court. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Dundee are on our local collection notes.
Dismantling, stage by stage
From your side the car's last journey is quiet, but the facility works through it in a set order. It is booked in against the registration and chassis number, so the record matches the car that left Dundee. The depollution bay comes first: battery, fuel, oils, coolant and refrigerant are taken out and stored for licensed waste contractors, and the airbags are dealt with. Reusable components are then removed and labelled, and the catalytic converter is set aside for its precious metals. The remaining shell is crushed and fed to a shredder, and its metals are sorted for recycling. When the car is scrapped, the facility notifies the DVLA and issues your Certificate of Destruction.
What to tell us before a car is dismantled
A few details change how a car is collected and where it goes, so give them when you send the reg. Say if the car is leaking fuel, oil or coolant, if it has been in a fire or a flood, or if an airbag has gone off. Say if it is electric or hybrid, because those go to partners equipped for high-voltage batteries. Tell us about access at your address in Dundee: a narrow lane, a low garage, or a car with no wheels. Then have photo ID ready, and the V5C if you have it. Empty the car of your belongings and leave the battery and fluids alone: depollution is done at the facility.
Unlicensed dismantling and why to avoid it
Dismantling an end-of-life car without authorisation is illegal in Scotland and England, and for good reason: drained fuel, oil and refrigerant pollute land and water, and an unmanaged battery or airbag can injure someone. It matters to you as well. Only an Authorised Treatment Facility can issue a Certificate of Destruction, and without one you have no proof the car has been destroyed, which can leave you answering for it later. So before you sell to anyone in Dundee, ask where the car is going; if you ask us, we will tell you which licensed facility is taking yours, so you can look it up on the public register kept by SEPA or the Environment Agency.

Learn moreQuestions people ask us
My car is in a multi-storey car park or a communal court in Dundee. Can you collect it?
It depends on access. Height limits and barriers in multi-storey car parks can stop a recovery truck, so tell us the car park, level and bay when you book, and we will say whether it can be reached. If the car is taxed, insured and has a valid MOT, moving it to street level first keeps things simple. In a communal court, tell us whether there is vehicle access and any barrier.
Who actually dismantles the car?
A licensed partner facility, not Motor Salvage Group. We buy the car, collect it and deliver it. The facility holds the authorisation from SEPA or the Environment Agency to depollute and dismantle vehicles, and its trained staff do the work, from draining fluids to removing reusable parts.
Can you take a car with deployed airbags or a flat battery?
Yes. Airbags and pretensioners are made safe at the facility during depollution, and a flat battery does not matter because the car is winched onto a recovery vehicle. Tell us about deployed airbags or electrical faults so the description, and the price, match the car.
Does the car need to be complete for dismantling?
No. We buy incomplete cars too, from shells missing their engine to cars without wheels. The price follows what is there, so tell us exactly what has been removed. A car on no wheels needs different loading, so say so when you send the reg.
What if the V5C is not in my name?
Tell us before we agree a price, because the car has to be bought from the person entitled to sell it. The driver checks photo ID against the V5C, or against the keeper's written authority if someone else hands the car over. If you bought the car and never registered it, or the logbook still names a relative, explain and we will tell you what proof we need.
