We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

A car that has failed its MOT on rust, or taken a knock to the rear, can still hold an engine, gearbox and interior worth reusing. Motor Salvage Group buys cars like that from Dundee sellers for their parts value. We collect free, pay by bank transfer and send the car to a licensed facility, where it is dismantled and the remainder recycled.

Parts are not something we sell: whatever is recovered belongs to the facility that breaks the car. Our job is to price what is still on your car in Dundee and get it to that facility. Everything up to the firm figure, from the first message on, happens on WhatsApp.

Dundee is around 130 miles from our Fort William base, and collections in the city, Broughty Ferry and the Angus side are grouped into scheduled runs across Tayside. We agree the date when you accept the price, and the driver rings on approach. Tell us if the car is in a multi-storey or a communal court. Postcodes, districts and how collection runs in Dundee are on our local page.

How we value a car for parts

Two sellers in Dundee with the same model can be offered different figures. The difference is in the detail. One car has its original alloys, a catalytic converter still in place and a clean-running engine at moderate mileage. The other has had its wheels swapped for worn ones, the converter taken, and an engine that knocks. Put them on a weighbridge and they are nearly identical; break them and they are not. That is why we ask what works, what does not and what has been removed before we give a figure, and why photos of the engine bay, the interior and each side help us price the car fairly.

What to have ready when you sell for parts

Anything taken off the car since you described it should be mentioned before the driver sets out, because the parts in the quote are what the figure is built on. The paperwork is simple: photo ID, and the V5C if you have it (if not, tell us before we quote). If a key is lost, say so up front: we can still buy the car, though it may alter the figure and the truck we send. Away on the day? Another adult you nominate can meet the driver, bringing photo identification of their own and a signed note from you. A recovery vehicle needs room to load, so warn us about narrow lanes, low garages or a handbrake that will not release. To keep a private number, retain it with the DVLA before the sale: it cannot be moved once the car is scrapped.

When parts value will not add much

Rarity cuts both ways. A car brought into the country in small numbers, such as a grey import or a model sold here only briefly, can hold perfectly good parts that few people are looking for, because few owners need them. Without that demand, a sound engine or a clean interior adds less than it would on a mainstream model, and weight and metal set more of the price. If your car is one of these, give us the exact model and engine when you ask for a quote. We price it on the realistic demand for its parts, not on what they cost new.

Read our full guide to selling a car to auto breakers, see what happens after you send the reg, or send us the reg.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

Questions people ask us

Can you collect an abandoned car from outside my house in Dundee?

No. We can only buy a car from its registered keeper or someone legally entitled to sell it, such as an executor or attorney; someone else can hand a car over for the keeper with the keeper's written authority, but payment still goes to the keeper. If a car has been dumped on your street, report it to Dundee City Council, which has powers to remove abandoned vehicles.

What should I tell you about my car to get a parts price?

Whether it starts and drives, the mileage, where any damage is, and which faults you know about. Photos of each side, the engine bay, the interior and the dashboard help most. If anything has been removed, say so, because a missing part cannot be priced in.

Does a non-original engine or gearbox change a parts price?

It can. A replacement engine or gearbox still counts if it works, so tell us it has been changed, roughly how many miles it has done and whether you have the garage invoice. A unit with no history is harder to value, and one that differs from the car's original specification may be less in demand.

Can I keep some parts before you collect the car?

You can, but tell us before we quote, because the price is based on what the car contains. Taking off the engine, wheels or catalytic converter lowers it most. Do not touch the battery or fluids: they are removed during depollution at the facility. And make sure the car can still be loaded.

Do you buy vans for breaking as well as cars?

Yes. Vans and pickups often break well because their engines, gearboxes, doors and load-area fittings are wanted by tradespeople keeping similar vehicles running. We collect from home addresses and business premises in Dundee alike, at no charge.
