We use these details to price your car and arrange collection, never for marketing. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and why.

Free collectionNo collection charge, whether the car starts or not.
Bank transfer, never cashPaying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 in England and Wales and the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015 in Scotland. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name.
Paperwork explainedYou tell the DVLA you have sold it to the motor trade, and any full months left on the vehicle tax are then refunded automatically. The licensed treatment facility notifies the DVLA and issues the Certificate of Destruction when the car is scrapped.
Recycled properlyScrapped cars are drained of fluids, stripped of reusable parts and recycled at permitted treatment facilities.

If your car has failed its MOT, stopped running or costs more to keep than it is worth, scrapping it should be simple and legal. Motor Salvage Group buys end-of-life cars and vans across Scotland and England. Send the registration and postcode, we reply with a firm price, and when you accept we agree a collection date. Collection is free: there is no collection charge and no admin fee. Distance is one of the things that sets the price, so the figure we quote already allows for the journey, and the figure we agree is the figure you are paid.

We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name, because the law requires a traceable payment for scrap vehicles and paying cash is illegal in Great Britain. We are the buyer, not the scrapyard. The car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), which depollutes and recycles it, and when the car is scrapped the ATF issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA.

Our only base is in Fort William and towns are reached on scheduled collection runs, so you never have to find a yard or arrange a tow. Send your postcode with the reg and we confirm on WhatsApp whether we can collect. Tell us where the car is, whether it starts and whether you have the V5C, and we plan the rest. If the car has a single fault and its engine, gearbox or other parts are still in demand, it may be worth more if you sell it as a broken car, and crash-damaged or written-off cars are covered on our salvage page.

Paperwork, the DVLA and your Certificate of Destruction

After collection the car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, which removes the fluids, battery and other hazardous parts, recovers anything reusable and recycles the shell. When the car is scrapped, the ATF issues the Certificate of Destruction: file it as your proof that the car was disposed of legally. If you have the V5C, hand the logbook to the driver but hold back the yellow section for selling to the motor trade, then tell the DVLA about the sale yourself, either online with the 11-digit reference, keeping the slip with your records, or by filling in the slip and posting it. GOV.UK says you can be fined if you do not. With no V5C, we ask for photo ID and proof you own the car, such as a purchase receipt, and you write to the DVLA instead. Once the DVLA is told, the vehicle tax is cancelled and any full months left are refunded automatically.

Before collection day

Take out anything personal: check the glovebox, door pockets, boot and spare wheel well, and remove any dashcam or child seat. If the car has a private number plate you want to keep, apply to the DVLA to take it off before collection, because the number is lost once the car is scrapped; our pre-scrap checklist covers the other jobs worth doing first. Have photo ID ready, with any keys and the V5C if you have them, and tell us about locked wheels, flat tyres or a tight space so the right recovery vehicle is sent.

Not sure which service you need? It does not matter. Send us the reg and we will tell you the best route, or read how the process works.

Three steps. One WhatsApp message.

You never fill in a long form or wait on hold. Send the reg, we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Send your reg on WhatsApp

Message us your registration and postcode, with a line on condition and a photo or two if the car is damaged. Or use the quote form, which opens WhatsApp with your details filled in.

  2. 2

    Get a firm price

We price on weight, make and model, condition and completeness, demand for its parts, distance and that week's metal prices, then reply with one figure. No range, and no haggling on the doorstep if the car is as described.

  3. 3

    Collected and paid

We agree a collection date. The driver checks the car against your description and sees your ID, and you are paid by bank transfer.

What decides the price we pay

We do not publish a price list because every car is different. These are the five things that move the number, so you know exactly what you are being paid for.

  • Weight

Scrap value starts with the metal. A heavy estate or 4x4 carries more steel and aluminium than a small hatchback, so it is worth more as scrap.

  • Make and model

Cars with sought-after engines, gearboxes or panels can be worth more than their weight, because those parts are reused rather than shredded.

  • Condition and completeness

A complete car with its catalytic converter, battery and wheels prices higher than one that has been stripped. Non-runners are fine; missing parts change the figure.

  • Distance and access

There is no collection charge. How far the car is from our routes, and whether it needs a winch or a smaller truck, are built into the price we quote, so the figure we agree is the figure you are paid.

  • Metal prices that week

Scrap steel and catalytic converter metals move in price from week to week. That is why we tell you how long a price stands when we send it, and why we do not promise a figure months ahead.

Questions people ask us

How do I scrap my car with Motor Salvage Group?

Send your registration number and postcode using the quote form or WhatsApp, with a line on the car's condition. We reply with a price. If you accept, we agree a collection date. We pay by bank transfer to an account in your name once the driver has checked the car and your ID.

Is collection really free?

Yes. There is no collection charge and no admin fee, whether the car runs or not. How far we travel is one of the things that sets the price, so the quote already allows for the journey. Tell us if the car is on private land or in a tight space so the right vehicle is sent.

How am I paid for my scrap car?

By bank transfer to an account in your name. Paying cash for scrap vehicles is illegal in Great Britain, and the law requires a traceable payment, so we use bank transfer. Have your account details ready when you accept the price.

Do I need the V5C logbook to scrap my car?

It helps, but it is not essential. If you have it, hand the V5C to the driver but hold back the yellow V5C/3 slip, then tell the DVLA you have sold the car to the motor trade: online with the 11-digit reference, keeping the slip with your records, or by filling in the slip and posting it. If it is missing, tell us when you ask for a quote. We ask for photo ID and proof you own the car, such as a purchase receipt, and you write to the DVLA about the sale instead.

Who tells the DVLA my car has been scrapped?

When your car is scrapped, the licensed Authorised Treatment Facility that treats it issues the Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA; keep the certificate with your records. That does not replace your own step: tell the DVLA yourself that you have sold the car to the motor trade, online with the 11-digit reference from your V5C or by posting its yellow V5C/3 slip. GOV.UK says you can be fined if you do not.

How soon can you collect my car?

It depends on where the car is. Collections run on scheduled routes from Fort William, so Scotland's central belt and north east are reached more often than English towns such as Walsall, Crewe, Atherton and Lowestoft, which are grouped into less frequent runs. We agree the date with you when you accept the price, and work around your availability.

Can I scrap a car that is on SORN or has no MOT?

Yes. A car does not need a current MOT or tax to be scrapped, and it can be on a Statutory Off Road Notification. It goes on a recovery vehicle, so it never has to be driven. Until collection, one parked on a public road must be taxed, insured and have a valid MOT; a car with no MOT has to wait off the road under SORN.
